Opportunities and obstacles for the inclusion of refugees and migrants into the main streams of society in Serbia

On Monday, December 18, at 11 o’clock, in the small hall of the Media Center, there was a presentation of the results of a research “Opportunities and obstacles for the inclusion of refugees and migrants into the main streams of society in Serbia” (Protection of refugees and migrants in Serbia from 2015 to 2017). The research represents an overview of data on the position of migrants and refugees in Serbia, with a special focus on the rights of women among the migrant population. The following aspects were analyzed for the purpose of the research: accommodation conditions, exposure to gender-based violence, opportunities for inclusion into the education processes and labor market, as well as availability of health protection and psychosocial assistance. The research also includes specific cases which have been used to present the process of protection and support, as well as the needs of women and children among the migrant population, as the most vulnerable group that is potentially most exposed to violence and exploitation.

Journalists were addressed by: Norbert Beckmann-Dierkes, director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Serbia, as well as Jelena Hrnjak and Milan Aleksic from the Association “Atina”.

The research has been conducted within the project “Building Together - Community Monitoring and Advocacy”, which is, in the territory of Serbia and Macedonia, jointly implemented by Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Association “Atina”, and Macedonian Lawyers Association.
