When Pandemics Collide: Marijana Savic a panelist at Columbia University webinar

We are delighted to share that Marijana Savic, founder and director of NGO Atina, will be among the panelists at the webinar "When Pandemics Collide: COVID-19 and Gendered Inequities of Health among the Forcibly Displaced", organized by the Columbia Global Centers and the Committee on Forced Migration.

Due to an increasingly restrictive border regime along the ‘Balkan route,’ the business of people smuggling is on the rise.

 Migrant smuggling and trafficking routes through the western Balkans that went dormant during the latter half of 2015 and early 2016 when migrants and refugees were allowed to move freely between Greece and northern Europe have re-emerged in the wake of border closures imposed nearly four months ago.

Border closures have led to a migrant smuggling boom in the Balkans

Regional training on migration was held in Zagreb, organized by ICITAP (International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program of the Department of Justice USA) and the Police Academy in Zagreb, and it gathered representatives of eight countries in the region who, on this occasion, had the opportunity to exchange experiences, examples of good practice, as well as policies and strategies their countries implemented during the refugee crisis.
